Marcia Atkinson, Executive Director of the Doc Williams SPCA, sees
the pet-friendly shelter that the Red Cross and partners are operating at Cane
Bay High School as a pro-active way to keep animals out of the shelter and keep
Lowcountry residents safe. After last year's devastating flood, more than 400
animals arrived at the animal shelter in just two days when their owners were forced
to flee the rising waters. "So many residents tell us they live in mobile
homes and cannot tear themselves away from their pets. If we can help people
keep their pets with them, we ensure animals don't end up in shelters."
